FAQ

Primary menu screen explained

Secondary menu screen explained

The controls feel awkward. Whenever I try to move around the map using two fingers, I end up painting by accident. Is there another way to control Inner Garden?

Yes. Multi-touch panning is not very reliable on some devices or might feel awkward to some users.  Whatever the reason, if you want to change this, just go to Preferences, select “Garden View Controls” and set it to “UI”. This enables a different control scheme that requires switching between painting and moving mode, so you can’t paint by accident anymore. For some people, it might be slower, but for others, it might be more reliable. The primary menu UI will have two new icons:

How can I completely clear my garden and start over?

Start a new garden using the “New Garden”  button on the secondary menu screen (see the pictures above).  In “Start with:” option, select “Empty, just grass.” Notice that there are other interesting starting options: random landscapes to give you something to start with if you “fear a blank page”, or pre-made example gardens. Each expansion pack comes with its example garden. Here, you can also name your garden and choose between medium and large garden size. Medium generally means the size of your device’s screen, large is usually larger, unless you have a hi-res tablet.

Why are the expansions so expensive?

The simple answer is: because, like you and everyone else, we need to pay the bills. Inner Garden is not made by hobbyists after work – it is a professional app, developed by two experienced pro developers.  It took  over 2 years to make. During those two years, we lived on our savings, so we need to get this investment back.

Please remember that most apps that are advertised as “free to play” will actually cost you a lot more than Inner Garden packs if you want to play them for more than half an hour. Unlike those apps, Inner Garden actually IS free – its basic free version is full of content with no features disabled. Also, Inner Garden does not trick users to spend uncontrolled (and often huge) amounts of money by small bits. Instead, it states the price honestly and clearly, treating its users with fairness and respect.

With a regular free-to-play game, it is hard to guess how much you will end up paying for your experience, whereas with Inner Garden you know instantly and clearly what you are paying for and how much you’ll actually pay.  Instead of finding out at the end of the month by looking at the credit card or phone bill, you know what the deal is even before you buy, which we think is more fair. We, as customers, want to be treated this way, so we hope you’ll appreciate being treated this way by us.

There will be more and more differentiation in expansion packs pricing: the older or smaller ones will become cheap while the new or luxury ones will be more expensive, so you won’t always have to spend 5 Euros to have something new to play with.

Lastly, the prices are always changing, with frequent temporary discounts, one-time sales etc. Therefore, if you are on a budget but still like to extend your Inner Garden, keep in touch with us – preferably following our Twitter, this website or even Facebook, where we announce sales.

The bottom line is: if we make enough money to live, we can keep developing Inner Garden and add all those cool things everyone’s been asking about: weather, seasons, night and day, moving animals. By buying, you not only get what you wanted, but also, you allow us to work on giving you even more.  We need your support to keep Inner Garden alive.

Why are there no assignments, tasks or missions?

The purpose of Inner Garden is to give you freedom to create what YOU want, not to tell you what WE as developers want you to do. The purpose of this app is to open up free space for you to explore, not to tie you onto a rail made by us. Creativity is always personal and unpredictable, it is all about self-expression.  Your gardens will be different from mine, and I don’t want you to build gardens like I would build them: I want you to build your gardens the way you and only you like them.

Since creativity and self-expression are gratifying in themselves, we don’t provide incentives in form of coins, XP, diamonds, energy etc. and we rely only on your personal satisfaction with your creations. Such systems of rewards are useful in games that ask users to do repetitive actions over and over – and those actions without rewards would be boring. In contrast, Inner Garden allows you to be free and creative.

We will not give you the gratification of unlocking, leveling up, getting “rich”, expanding – but there are a lot of other games out there that can serve you if that is what you need. However, Inner Garden can give a different kind of gratification: recalling cherished memories, imagining a dream garden you once want to have and dream about what would happen in it, or perhaps even sketch out ideas for a real garden. None of these things can be accomplished in games that give you one task after another.  Inner Garden is simply different.

Can I undo mistakes?

Yes. You simply go to the primary menu, tap on the circular arrow button (see the picture on top of this page). This opens the “Undo player”. The Undo player lets you step back and forth through the whole history of your garden (isn’t that cool? :).  The “fast forward” and “fast rewind” buttons work for complete painting gestures while the regular buttons step through the gestures square by square.

Hi Esther! Thanks for your suggestions! We definitely want to include Asian garden architecture soon. In an upcoming pack (Landmarks), there will be a pagoda-like building, and we also have plans for a Japanese Garden pack. We would also like to make a bunch of playground-themed items like swings in a small, cheap pack. If you have specific images or things in mind, please feel free to send us links to pictures – it might well happen that your personal suggestion will make it to Inner Garden! :)

    Hey Guys,
This game looks absolutely divine! I want to play it so much, but I only have a PC. Would you ever design a PC version? I have been searching and searching for a game just like this that gives me all the freedom to create what I want, as art therapy, if you will, but I am so sad this game is not available for PC. If you aren’t going to make this a PC version, can you suggest a game just like this which IS for PC?

    Thank you so much!
    Natalie

Hi Natalie, as I explained elsewhere, PC version is theoretically possible but financially implausible at the moment as it would take several months to make and probably would result in a financial loss. The reason why there are no other games like Inner Garden is because unlocking and building mechanics drive sales but disrupt the peacefully creative experience. The latter was more important for us than the profit, but most other developers, especially the corporate ones don’t think that way.

i love the game but i want more than one garden so i can do lots of things. Can i do this at all? It’s really disappointing that i can’t so i would love if you could do something about this. But free other wise it would be pointless. Thank you
    Alicia.

Hi Alicia, fortunately you can save as many gardens as you like, and come back to them at any time you like! The relevant buttons are in the secondary menu: please take a look at our FAQ here: http://www.dustflake.com/faq/ Let us know if you have any more questions!

Great app — lots of fun! I can’t seem to find a way to completely delete a garden that is no longer wanted. Can that be done? Thanks.

    • Petr
      Jul 05, 2013 @ 12:09:37

Thank you, Robert. I assume that by deleting, you don’t mean starting a new garden which is covered in this FAQ. If you want to delete the actual file from your SD card, you can find it in the InnerGarden directory. Every garden uses as a file name the name you’ve given it when starting it. It generates four files: one for a garden, one for its backup, the remaining two being history and history backup. You can delete these manually if you want, but they are actually tiny files taking up almost no space at all (if that’s your concern).

I adore this app, I have it on my phone. It is very peaceful, beautiful and I love to create things. I was curious if you were willing to make a pc version of this? Maybe released on Steam. Or through your site..It is wonderful and I would enjoy playing it on my laptop since I do not own a tablet. A larger image would be breathtaking.

Hi Elizabeth, thank you for writing us! Of course we are willing to make a PC port in principle, but in practice it is not likely simply because of practical considerations: weighing the amount of time and effort a port takes against the possible profit shows that it might not be a justifiable decision right now. Apologies if what I say is obvious to you, but we have to function as a business and make enough money to keep going. If Inner Garden attracts a lot of paying customers, we could hire people to do iOS and PC ports, but as an independent developer, we’re still struggling to break even so plans for expansion are not very topical right now.

    Hiy from England.
I am a specialist ceramic artist and when I fancy some time out from my art I am thrilled to have discovered Inner Garden. I have spent many happy hours in my real garden in the evenings just doodling with this and it is one of my most favorite apps of all time. Thanks so much and I never get bored with the music which is very well chosen indeed.
For the future I would personally like to see some animals such as cats introduced. I think it would be really awesome to have hundreds of virtual cats (I only have 6 in my real garden) in my Inner Gardens. Also I wonder if there is a way in time of making it possible to create sloping scenes for say mountainside gardens or terraces with flights of steps or castle walls.
Brilliant, I will send you pics of what I have done soon.
    Heather

Hi Heather, thanks for dropping us a line! Looking at your website, I would say that we have created Inner Garden for people just like you! As for the animals: we would also love to have them, but it’s a rather big feature for just the two of us. Like the sloped terrain, we would like to get this in at some point but since we are an independent developer with no investments or corporate backing, we have to schedule our time really carefully if we want to keep going with Inner Garden. At this point, we are adding more content (new packs) but not new major features. Let’s hope this can change soon! If we ever get around to making animated animals, we’ll do cats with love just for you and Natalie! :) Good luck to you both!

I was wondering if you could delete an already existing garden…so can you do it,and if you can, how can you delete it

    • Petr
      Nov 24, 2013 @ 10:39:06

You can delete an existing garden using any file management software on your device – there is a folder named “Inner Garden” where you can find by name all the gardens that you have saved. However, if you want to delete the gardens because of storage space considerations, please remember that these are actually very small files and they take up almost no space at all. (Unlike picture files etc.). This is just a brief comment – if you need more help with finding the right folder etc. please reply back and we can work out the details!

Hi Katharina, thanks for dropping a line. All the music in Inner Garden is original, composed and performed by us, so you can only find it in the app. If you would like to get an mp3 for your player, just let us know and we will send it to you by email. :) BTW we both love Germany, we both lived there for almost five years and it’s a beautiful country of lovely people! Cheers, Petr, IG artist

    Hello dustflake;
I had recently just contacted you about I was having with opening the inner garden game. I’ve noticed an “error message” when opening saying it cannot be opened. I have not had this problem since first purchasing it. The app has not been updated since I bought it and I still have space on my tablet. My android system has not updated recently.
Maybe it is a glitch on my tablet. I restarted my tablet and cleared the cache… hope it will help.
